Mphoentle Mabusela

Black. Queer. Artist. All these exist in one vessel. A plethora of energies expressed in one entity. Their ancestors' wildest dreams manifested.
They allow themselves to be engulfed by craft to turn it into art. Their art is expressed through textiles and photography, Mphoentle uses these to communicate visions and concepts most important to them and actualizes them. These are all expressed through their textiles. Focusing mainly on tufting and weaving, they have learnt to stitch together memories, feelings, and even traumas. Textiles have offered a romantic way of starting conversations around difficult topics. Not only does this form of artistry provide a healing and comforting experience for them but it offers a similar experience to the collectives that are exposed to their work. Softness, healing and comfort are themes most associated with their work even when tackling social issues that come with intersectionality

Mphoentle's series titled 'Be As You Are' explores themes surrounding blackness and queerness as a feminine presenting person and the intersectionality of it all. They use textile art, specifically embroidery, to connect these subjects to one another. The series includes titles such as 'Roommates', 'Picnic in the Park' and 'Darling'.
They take inspiration from artists such as Thenjiwe Nkosi and Mercy Thokozane Minah and tries to capture the essence of being black and femme.
