We Are
love. art. all
This series follows 20-something year old black lesbians located in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. It’s all about love. The beauty of black lesbian love (romantic, platonic and self). It documents how black lesbian love is experienced and expressed in its multiple forms. The photographs are accompanied by poetry and love letters I’ve written to myself, for my partner and for the individuals, in this series, who share their love with us. This is a love letter to myself and those who relate to the stories. It is a love letter to us.

My Lifejacket
Masande and Zandile

My Lifejacket
the life jacket that your love,
continues to save me each time I'm thrown into the sea.

a buoy that floats in a lonely sea.
the red catches my eye and i reach
out to hold on as tight as i
possibly can.
you are my constant, the buoy that keeps me afloat.

My Home
Anele and Simphiwe

My Home
i want to lay my head on your chest
to feel your heart beat as if it were music to my ears,
to feel your chest rise and fall as my head submits to the movements of your body,
to feel the breath from your lungs warm my face as we start to sync breaths.
to close my eyes and imagine us as the only lovers that exist.
'i want to lay my head on your chest'
means that we’re in love.
it means that you love me enough to never let go,
it means that i love you enough to hold on just as tight.
you quiet my mind and fill it with just two thoughts; your love and our love, because you are MY love.
my biggest love, my healthiest love, my ever evolving love, my kindest love, my most gentle love, my most thoughtful love, my favourite love, my forever love.
